'And than, it becomes that' - Ropes Aligned & Isabel Cordeiro geproduceerd door Why Not X ECD
Zestien studenten van de opleiding Expanded Contemporary Dance aan de Academie voor Theater en Dans in Amsterdam (AHK) tarten de zwaartekracht met verticale dans, samen met en voortbouwend op het onderzoek van Ropes Aligned (Suzanne de Bekker en Natasja Bode) en Isabel Cordeiro.

Geïnspireerd op de eerste pogingen om de zwaartekracht te begrijpen die teruggaan tot de Griekse filosoof Aristoteles (384-322 v.C., het universum bevindt zich handig onder zijn voeten) brengen de studenten, in zwevende toestand, de zwaartekracht trotserend, nieuwe relaties tot stand tussen hun lichaam en de elementen. Weg van Aristoteles' geocentrische kijk op het universum, wagen de studenten zich in een onbekende ruimte en herbouwen/herdefiniëren deze ruimte door er hun eigen interpretatie aan te geven: "And than, it becomes that"
A site specific performance conceptualised and developed by Isabel Cordeiro and Ropes Aligned in collaboration with the ECD students, Expanded Contemporary Dance, AHK.
The piece is the outcome of a six-week teaching module comprising a reading group on gravity —science fiction, philosophy, cultural theory and more— and an intensive course on vertical dance techniques —working with each other’s weight, working with suspension and using the wall as dance partner.
Inspired by the first attempts to grasp gravity dating back to Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 BC) who claimed that the five elements —earth, water, air and fire— gravitated towards the centre of the Universe according to their weight (the centre of the universe being conveniently located underneath his feet) the students, in suspension, defying gravity, establish new relations between their bodies and the elements. Moving away from Aristotle’s geocentric view of the universe the students venture into an unknown space rebuilding/redefining this space by subjecting it their own interpretation: “And then, it becomes that.”
